INSPIRATION

The Deli

It was with a sigh of relief that I finally sat down in that popular midtown manhattan deli. I was hungry and it's been a crazy busy morning. I opened my freshly made lunch, the spices and aromas warming me as I looked through the window. It was cold outside. Snow blizzard cold. Winter in New York City.

Just as I started enjoying my meal I sensed someone approaching me after entering the deli. The place wasn’t that crowded as it was long past lunch rush hour. I glanced to my right noticing a homeless person. It looked like he was wearing pajama pants and an oversized jacket. About five sizes too big.

He came to stand so close to me that I couldn’t ignore him. As I turned he asked, “can you please buy me something to eat?”. Then he smiled a big smile, his large white teeth in stark contrast to his jet black skin. I was about to just brush him off like I have so many a beggar. The streets of New York City certainly had no shortage of the homeless.

This time however, I couldn’t. He didn’t ask me for money. He must be hungry as he did actually come into this deli and specifically only asked whether I would buy him a meal, I thought. But what really got to me were the words from scripture I know too well to have left my conscience in peace, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

Oh great. “He’s got me” I thought. There’s no excusing myself out of this one. To make matters worse there were people sitting on both sides of me and he didn’t approach any of them. He came in the door and came straight for me. It was as if he knew who it was that needed to do some giving today! I also noticed the lady taking orders was now approaching and was probably going to ask him to leave. I looked at him with that big smile on his face and told him to place his order and that I’ll meet him at the cashier. He quickly thanked me, turned and placed his order with the lady that was about to ask him to leave. She must’ve overheard me and took his order.

As I continued enjoying my meal I looked over my shoulder to notice just how happy he’s become standing in the queue watching how his meal is being made. It's almost has if he became happier after each additional portion of food was added. I also noticed the folks in the shop staring at his strange behaviour, nevermind his fashionable outfit.

My phone beeped. I checked my messages. Then there was a tap on my shoulder. It was him, with meal in hand. “Oh, I’m coming” I said, but as I got up to settle his bill a gentlemen that looked like the owner put his hand on my shoulder and said with a smile, “don’t worry about it, we’ve got this”. The homeless man looked at both of us, smiled, shrugged his shoulders as if to say “hey that’s fine by me” and walked out into the cold with a warm meal.

As I wrapped up my meal, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. I came to this deli today to feed my physical body and didn’t expect to have my soul nourished as well.
